It was 11:30 at night. I was in the awkward state right before being completely unconscious where I could somewhat hear noises but couldn’t understand what they were or where they were coming from. Just as I was about to completely fall asleep, the most irritating and cringe inducing sound buzzed next to my head. The sound of my phone alerting me that somebody had just followed my father on Pinterest. This makes the alert all the more annoying because it has nothing to do with me. The only reason I have Pinterest on my phone is to look at ideas for my dorm. And this wouldn’t be the first time this has happened since my father has a little offer 3,000 followers on Pinterest. It’s almost a nightly routine.
There is no denying that social media has become a major topic of discussion since the start of MySpace. It opened up the world to new possibilities ranging from reconnecting to old friends, saying or doing stupid things that could potentially hurt a persons career, and keeping up with celebrities. But one website has so much more to offer than just selfies. Pinterest was launched 2010 by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp and only had 5,000 users. Today the website has over 70 million users worldwide and is worth a cool $5 billion.
Pinterest is every scrapbookers, teenage girls, and visual learners dream come true. By simply creating a board, a user can surf Pinterest’s infinite database, choose different categories of user submitted content and find exactly what gets their hearts and minds racing with excitement. Anybody can upload their own creations for the site as well. The site is a way to show off your latest masterpiece, get inspired or created the vision board you always wanted.
You can view step by step tutorials on how to make crafts, cook recipes and assemble a doll house simply by choosing new categories. It’s a great way to see how to cook gourmet dishes at home, attempt them, and fail miserably. There is even a category to view failed Pinterest ideas. And with the site constantly growing, there is alway new content to pin to any one of your many boards.
